Sugar cookies have such a wide range of possibilities, but a lot of those possibilities are way too sweet, or take hours of decorating. I'm much more a fan of the more "homemade" (aka easy to make) looking cookies so when I found this recipe I definitely knew I needed to give it a try. These ended up being one of the first Christmas cookies I put into my regular baking rotation.
The buttermilk keeps them nice and chewy and gives them some balance to the sweetness. I always roll the balls of dough in the colored sugar to give it a full on effect and really make those colors pop. I do red and green for Christmas but you could definitely do any other combo of colors for other holidays! Try pink and red for Valentine's Day or rainbow for birthday parties!
Rolling them in the sugar makes them nice and colorful so they really pop on a cookie tray and I just love how versatile they are. I also love that I don't have to make a frosting and spend a bunch of time trying to get the frosting to look nice to make a delightful sugar cookie.
